Interest Group activities

Come and join any of our forty or so Interest Groups, details of which can be found below. For more details of contacts, when and where meetings take place, have look at the Interest Group summary page. Bingham u3a members can join any number of groups for free (as long as there is room!); visitors are welcome to come along once or twice and pay a £1 visitors fee.

Ambling 1 - The group is full at present but vacancies do arise. It meets every Monday at 10.30am by Old Church House. Contact Sue Hodson on 01949 875963.

Ambling 2 - This group meets fortnightly on Tuesdays in the main Bingham car park at 1pm. Ring Judy Soar on 01949 837108 the morning of the amble to find out where they are going.

Book Reading - The meetings are on the 3rd Tuesday of the month at 1.30pm in Bingham library. Group Contact: Jo Barnes on 01949 876510.

Board Games - The board games group gets together on the second Monday of the month. Meetings will be held at the bowls club starting at 7pm. We play a wide variety of games from traditional classics to modern ones straight off the press and encompass strategy, number, word, quiz, general knowledge and card games. New members are very welcome and everyone is encouraged to bring along their favourite games for us to try. Cinema Group - The group meets at the White Lion at 2 pm on the first Monday of the month (excl Bank Holidays). We usually suggest a film or two for the following month, but it doesn´t matter if you haven´t been able to get to any. Come anyway and join a lively discussion on a wide range of topics about film, film adaptation or occasionally TV programmes. Contact Joanne Collie on 01949 831899 or Jackie Hutton on 01949 838140.

Coffee Morning Social Group - The group meets on the 2nd Monday of the month at 10.30am. We welcome everyone to join us. Please come along if you wish to find out more about the u3a or join us for a chat and a laugh. We meet in the back room at the Wetherspoon's Buttercross pub, and usually finish up at midday. Coffee and tea is only £1.20 and includes refills. Contact Sue Eaton on 01949 839946.

Croquet - This is a fair weather activity and takes place in the summer months on fortnightly on Thursdays at Butt Field. We have had an enjoyable and successful summer and look forward to the new season starting in May 2020. Contact Trish Tilley on 01949 837923.

Cycling - We have a shorter 10 to 15 mile ride on the second Tuesday of each month and a longer of over 20 miles ride on the fourth Tuesday. Rides start at 10.30 am from The Buttercross in the Market Place. Contact Charles Richardson on 01949 831602 or 07490 690157 to find out more.

Explorer Group - This group arranges visits to places of interest. Unlike the travel group, transport is not organised but car share can be arranged. We've previously visited:

  • Wollaton Park, taking in steaming of the historic beam engine with a guided tour of the Hall

  • BBC Nottingham Studios on London Road.

  • Harlaxton Manor near Grantham.

And this year we had planned:

  • March: Newark Air Museum

  • April: Woolsthorpe Manor

  • June: Hanwell Wine Estate

More are planned and we hope to visit:

  • Space Centre; Sherwood Forest; Gliding; Patchings Art Centre;

  • Japanese Garden at North Clifton; Aeropark at East Midlands Airport.

French Conversation - Our two groups meet at members’ homes to maintain our spoken French with pre-selected topics and spontaneous conversation. Ce n’est pas pour les debutants. There are spaces on both groups but anyone joining must have some knowledge of the language. Group 1 meets on Fridays fortnightly and Group 2 meets on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday afternoons. French for Improvers - This group started in 2016 for complete beginners but has now moved on to become 'improvers'! New members who have a basic grasp of French are welcome but complete beginners would have a lot of catching up to do! It is run by French-Canadian Joanne Collie and meets in the Old Court House at 10-11am on alternate Tuesdays. Contact Joanne on 01949 831899 or email

Gentle Exercise Group 2 meets every week on Tuesday, 1-2pm in the Small Hall in Old Church House. Very gentle sitting and some standing exercises. Contact Linda Walden 01949 836717.

German Conversation -The group meets in each other's homes on a fortnightly basis to enjoy a chat in German with German-themed snacks and drinks. New members with some knowledge of German are welcome as we are not a beginners' group. Meetings fortnightly on a Thursday. Contact: Valerie Morgan on 0115 9332353.

History - The History Group will begin a study of the early life and times of Winston Churchill in October 2019. Churchill was born four years after the death of Charles Dickens, our last subject of study and, like Dickens, he has been chosen by the group as a major figure of his period. The group meets on the 4th Wednesday of the month at 2pm in Old Church House. New members are always welcome. For further information contact Jennie Travers on 01949 875107.

'I'd Like to Have a Go At That' Group - The aim of this group is to give members the opportunity to try out new activities in a friendly and supportive environment. The current list of activities is given below and ranges from the physically and mentally challenging to the sedate that anyone can do. We know that it is not everyone’s cup of tea to abseil down the side of a building and for that reason you only need to join in the activities you would like to do. We usually meet once a month taking on a different activity each time; there is no set time or date but we try to fit an activity when most people who are interested can attend.

During 2019, we 'Had a Go' at Badminton, Basket Weaving, Drumming, Escape Room, Foot Golf, Go Ape, Off-Road Driving, Segway, Bowls, Crazy Golf and Walking Orienteering.

Knitting Group - Meets on the fourth Monday of the month at 10.30am at the home of Helen Rose. The group has been knitting puppets for use by carers working with vulnerable children. You are very welcome to bring along your own project. Contact Helen on 01949 839298 for more details.

Mobility and Movement - This group meets weekly on Friday at 10am in the hall at the Methodist Centre. Contact Ann Lewis on 01949 831530.

Music Appreciation - The meetings are held in member's houses. See current Newsletter for details of the next meeting. Each month there is a different theme and there has been a huge variety so hopefully there would be something to tempt your musical palettes. New members are always welcome. Photography Group - The group is open to all abilities from novice snapper upwards. The course runs monthly for an hour on the first Friday of the month starting at 11am in Room 2 of the Methodist Centre. Contact Simon Rooke on 07714 706114 or email for more information.

Popular Music Group - The idea of this group is to attend live together. Any genre of music could be covered: jazz, folk, rock, blues etc. We have recently been on the Poacherline Music Train, organised by Bateman’s brewery. There is musical entertainment on board and at the ale for sale! Proceedings start at Bingham station and a lively night is usually had by all! Real Ale & Cider Group - The idea is that there will be visits to Breweries to see beer making as well as tasting. Contact Ann Lewis on 01949 831530 to find out dates of trips organised.

Recorder Meeting - On first and third Friday mornings 10.30-11.30am in the smallest room at Old Church House. The group can accommodate a range of abilities and welcomes beginners along with the more experienced. Some tuition of the basics is available. STEM Group - This interest group started in January 2020 and covers Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Two topics have been covered so far: The rise and fall of coal ; The fall and rise of renewable energy. The group will restart later this year to discuss another topic relating to your carbon footprint: Home heating, transport and food.

The sessions take place at 11.00 am in Room 2 of the Bingham Methodist Centre on the last Thursday of each month. If you are interested in coming along and joining in, please contact Dave Hobson at or on 01949 836042.

Spanish Group - Meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month at different members' houses. Doreen Nuttall is the point of contact on 01949 838343. The group has made some progress and so unfortunately is no longer open to complete beginners.

Sunday Lunches - Group 1 meets on the first Sunday of each month and Group 2 on the third Sunday. Both are full at the moment but contact Jill Kent on 0115 9334516 or Margaret Rudkin on 01949 877170 to go on a waiting list.

Table Tennis - We play for fun and exercise rather than competitively! We meet at Toothill Leisure Centre 4.30 to 5.30pm on 1st & 3rd Wednesday of each month. Contact Lynne Barnett for more details 01949 875151 and to get put on the email list to keep up to date with any changes in the arrangements.

Theatre Visits - Each month visits to current productions, usually in Nottingham, are arranged. For full details please see the Theatre Trips page on this website or the current Newsletter. Jackie has a table at the monthly meeting where you can book tickets or pay your dues.

Travel Group - This meets normally on the last Friday of the month at the Royal Oak, East Bridgford at 12.15 p.m. If you are attending please inform Judy Barlow (01949 837637 ) by the Tuesday prior to the meeting. Walking Groups

The First Wednesday Walking Group meets on the first Wednesday of the month for a medium length, 5-6 mile walk, followed by a pub lunch. The contact is Judith Williams on 07523 645105 or 01949 837697. Meet 9.30am outside Old Church House for a car share.

The Second Wednesday Walking Group is for longer walks, around 6-10 miles . The group meets at Old Church House at 9am on the second Wednesday of the month to share cars. Group Contact Esme Smith on 01949 875148.

The Fourth Wednesday Walking Group meets on the fourth Wednesday of the month. The contacts are John & Glyn Greenwood on 0115 9899798. The group size is limited by the size of lunch venue but please contact John or Glyn to book your place.

Wine Tasting - We meet once a month and usually try about 8 different wines. We are not experts but we know how to enjoy wine! As we hold our meetings in members' homes the size of the group is limited but please contact Lynne Barnett on 01949 875151 to find out more about the group. We would be happy to offer advice and assistance to anyone wishing to set up a second group.

Writing Group - This group meets monthly, usually on a Friday to share members’ writings, often following an agreed theme. The atmosphere is relaxed, helpful and non-judgemental with the aim of helping participants to improve their writing skills and to enjoy writing. No previous experience is necessary, just the desire to write in whatever form. If anyone would like to join this group please contact Gordon Wallace at or on 07809 226285.

Please note that there is a reciprocal arrangement with the Vale of Belvoir (Bottesford) u3a. Members of Bingham u3a can join two interest groups offered by the Vale of Belvoir (Bottesford) u3a and vice versa.
